The Bear
Hunter was built in Sweden in 1938 as an off-shore rescue vessel for
the Swedish Coast Guard. Designed to roll over and right herself, she
can take on safely the most severe storm conditions. In the 1940's, she
went into private ownership and pioneered the charter trade in the
Virgin Islands. This lovely lady now plies Alaskan coastal waters
looking after hunters and sportsmen from all over the world.
Her hull is full-keeled rivited black iron with an extra layer of ice
sheathing is 59 feet in length with a 12 foot, six inch beam. The large
portholes speak her charming Old World European design. Ketch-rigged,
she is also powered by a 300 HP John Deere turbo-diesel engine. The Bear
Hunter is comodious and comfortable. The diesel-fired hot water furnace
provides plenty of hot water for bathing and cooking and powers the iron
radiators throughout the boat, keeping her guests and crew warm and dry.
There is a 7.5kw generator, commercial regrigeration unit, a 2000 watt
inverter, 20gph watermaker along with 500 gallon diesel and water tanks
which make her quite self-sufficent and capable of long cruises. |

The main salon is
comfortably spacious and finished with Old World nautical charm, warm
wood and brass appointments abounding. You could spend many a happy hour
here in rain or heavy weather watching the scenery and ever-changing
sea. The generous galley is modern, shipshape and fully equipped to
produce sumptious full-course meals.
Each of the three double staterooms is light and airy and has a full
private bath and plenty of storage. Not everyone who sets sail on The
Bear Hunter is a midget. The berths are extra-long for a good night's
sleep. Indeed, there is 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom throughout the
boat.
Well fitted and lovingly maintained, lubbers and sailors alike will take
constant delight in this great lady. Coupled with the unforgettable
seascapes, scenery and wildlife of Alaska, every hunting and fishing
experience is all the more special, thanks to The Bear Hunter. |
